New York - Dancing with professionals
We are still uploading pictures from New York! This is the last set.
Our last day in New York was just crazy. It was a friday and we had arranged to meet with all our friends in New York that day since we thought we would be over with sightseeing -being our last day and everything-.
It didn't go as smoothly as planned I must admit. We went to see the Museum of Natural History in the morning and then ran to the Guggenheim Museum to see its nice architecture. We had arranged to meet my friend Lou at Penn Station at around noon. He lives in Syracuse which is about 6 hs away from NYC by train. Because we had known each other for almost 10 years and had never actually met face to face (loooong story), he said "Hey! if you are coming this close to home and from Japan, going down to meet you is the least I can do!" and so he did.
Back to the morning that day; as we finished rushing through the Museum of Natural History, we set out on foot for the Guggenheim Museum across Central Park. That park is big! It took us quite some time to stroll from one museum to the other. Natasa was quite interested on watching that building and I was more worried about not making it to the rendezvous with Lou. Besides, we didn't have a mobile phone on us so that people could reach us. Bad idea.
Finally me arrive to the Guggenheim and voila! the beautiful building is under maintenance! Meaning that the whole facade is covered with construction scaffolds and leaving only the entrance free. We took a couple of pictures nevertheless.
We decide to catch a taxi to take us to Penn Station where Lou is supposed to be waiting for us. Bad idea. Taxis in New York, specially Manhattan, at peak hours are as slow as limping turtles! We should have caught the subway. When we finally arrive to the Station which, by the way, is right below the Madison Square Garden... it was HUGE!
How will we meet Lou there? specially not knowing exactly how he looked like! Luckily, I'm a resourceful person. I just walked to the first ticket booth and asked -nicely- to the man working there if he could page Lou on the loudspeakers. So he did, and there comes this lad out of the crowd wearing an old military jacket and smiling at the occurrence walking toward us. Fiuuu!
We went for lunch to a nice irish restaurant where we devoured american sized steaks and local beer while updating each other about our respective lives. Great time.
Lou left back for Syracuse at 4 and we were supposed to meet our distinguished friend Christian Chan who traveled all night from Boston by bus to see us. Because of not having a mobile, we couldn't set up a meeting on time. Luckily, NYC is full of public phones -which eat your coins at an alarming rate- and I didn't give up trying to contact him. We finally talked to each other and met in front of the Madam Trousseau's wax Museum.
We had coffee and then went for dinner, nachos and margaritas at Greenwich Village! Great time.
We then set up a meeting with our friends Bafana and Shawn to go dancing that night. We met Bafana and Shawn back in Japan when they came to perform with the Battery Park Dance Company. On wednesday that week, we had been invited for dinner by Battery Park Dance Co's director Jonathan Hollander and his family on our first night in New York. We had a delightful time, thanks Jonathan!
The guys took us dancing to a bar/club they use to frequent. We had so much fun! Thanks guys for the great time. We hope to repay you the favor whenever and wherever we happen to meet again.
Finally we left at midnight back to the hotel to pick up our bags and leave for the airport that night. Goodbye to New York. It was such a great, enriching experience! We loved the city more than we had expected we would and we hope to be back, and with more time this time, as soon as possible.
Thanks everybody for the love and the wonderful time you gave us there.
Now the pictures:
